Dream of writing a novel but can’t find time to write? You may need to rethink that. A team of wordsmiths from across the country wrote an entire novel collaboratively in one day: 23 authors, 1 illustrator, 24 hours. The 24 Hour Novel Project led by New Hampshire artist and writer John Herman was a featured work at the inaugural NewMediator Art Show at Nighthawk Books in Highland Park, New Jersey, and viewers around the world watched via the web as every word was composed in real-time. The collaboration culminated in a free Creative Commons licensed e-book available for download below.

To get the novel quickly, download the OVERFLY PDF which will work with most devices including KINDLE, DROID, iPAD, iPHONE, iPOD, or your personal computer. The formatting is going to be a little altered for each device, but hopefully it will be very readable.

If you want a file specifically designed for your NOOK or KINDLE, then you need to download the novel via one of the hosted links below. FYI: The file host makes you wait briefly before you can download the file in order to force you to glance at their advertisers. Wait 25 seconds then click REGULAR DOWNLOAD.

NOOK

Remember 2009? That was the year that brought us balloon boy jokes. What will the next year bring? Here are five projections for techno-culture game changers in 2010. What do you think? Make your own projections in the comments.

1. Augmented Reality

You want to eat a hot dog. You type “hot dog” into your smart phone, hold it up, and the screen reveals a real world camera image enhanced with superimposed geo-tagging that not only tells you where to get a hot dog but allows you to rate the hot dog in terms of quality and price. The marriage of the real world and computer data is making people froth at the mouth. And this week Japanese startup Tonchidot announced $4 million in investment for its mobile/social geo-tagging application that boasted 100,000 users in its first four days. Augmented reality is becoming a reality.

2. Project Natal

Controller-free gaming. Let me say that again. Controller-free gaming. What’s possibly next? Remember when Marty McFly showed future kids how to play the shoot ‘em up game? “You mean you have to use your hands? That’s like a baby’s toy!” Rumors point to a November launch, so it’ll be a late year game changer. Nevertheless: Don’t worry future kids, we’re catching up.

3. Rupert Murdoch

The media mogul (with a net worth of $4 billion) wants to take something that is free and charge for it. Specifically he wants to take his news (see: Wall Street Journal) out of the hands of search engines (see: Google) and make others (see: Bing) pay for it. It will be interesting to see him try. Bye bye, Wall Street Journal?

4. Cloud Computing

You are in Best Buy. You ask an employee: “Hey, how much hard drive space does this have?” She answers: “There’s no hard drive space. Everything is saved on the web.” Well, there you have it. Call me crazy? I refer you to the Google Chrome OS. If you’ve been using Google Documents for the past few years, then a transition to complete cloud computing could be refreshing. And the potential for cloud computing in the education field is immense. Just think: students never lose their homework!

5. Apple’s iPad/Tablet/Thingy

It doesn’t matter what it turns out to be. It will be a game changer if it provides the best of the iPhone with everything a Kindle and Nook can do. Bye bye, books? Not yet, but the brand recognition alone will drive this kind of device into the mainstream.

Think you’re trapped in a fantasy world? Thomas doesn’t think. He knows.

In 1979, Thomas in Wonkyland was the most popular children’s television show in America. Young Thomas and a cast of colorful puppets solved life issues by sharing, caring, and being true to themselves. After years of wholesome fun, the television screens went dim, the viewers grew older, and the world moved on.

Now the cast is back, and a lot of things have changed.

Decades later, Thomas is still trapped in Wonkyland, the same puppet world he enjoyed as a boy. Yearning to see the world beyond imagination, Thomas is a dysfunctional man-boy forced to grow up in a child’s dreamland. Discover what has changed now that Thomas and his magical friends must face the trials and tribulations of adult life.

Coming soon to the web!

Today there is an update in The Spotlight about Gravityland! The column is aptly named “Gossip: What’s new with John Herman today?” I must say it was a little surreal happening upon it. Yes, this IS what is new with me today. I like that I sound a little bit like the Robin Hood of New Media.

John Herman and his band of merry men and womenfolk are at it again. This time he and collaborators are working on “Gravityland,” “it is a Web-serial episodic story. …; I’m using every single artist and actor I know,” says Herman. “I call it the ‘super interactive media project-soap opera.’”
