This week Spotlight Entertainment published a review of my website called You’ll be jealous of John Herman’s site. I think it is a positive review. Here’s an interesting clip that relates me to a person named Denny:
Growing up, I knew this kid named Denny. We went to school together from third grade right through high school. Denny was the best kickball player, the best floor hockey player, he was a top tennis player, football player and he got good grades. I wanted to hate the guy except he was a nice person, too.
Apparently there is a “Denny” of the A&E community named John Herman. He’s a writer, producer, actor, musician and artist, just to name a few, and it appears he’s good at all of those things.
Thank you John Shore for the flattering review!

The November issue of New Hampshire Magazine debuts an It List: 34 smart cookies, rising stars, brave souls, hot shots, and cool fools. I’m not sure which one of those I am, but I am honored to be featured in a list that includes other New Hampshire folks like Seth Myers (Saturday Night Live), Sarah Silverman (one of Time Magazine’s six Standouts of Comedy), Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway), and many other notables. Wait. Dean Kamen?! I wonder if this will bring me any closer to my dream of featuring a Segway on an episode of The Eye? A man can dream…
Thank you again for the honor, New Hampshire Magazine!

My weekly video blog The Eye is featured in the latest episode of Steve Garfield’s Vlog Soup. According to his wikipedia entry, Steve is “one of the Internet’s first video bloggers.” I like to tell Steve that he is the youthful grandfather of vlogging. Steve tells me that he would be a good improv comedian. Either way, this post is going to further solidify Steve’s dominance in my tag cloud. Thanks Steve!

My friend Paul Verschueren faces life in an inspiringly thoughtful way. Recently his life challenges have inspired him to start a video journal. This is his first entry. I helped him record and edit it during a brief visit he made to New Hampshire from Washington. That’s downtown Exeter in the background. Paul doesn’t know if he will post all of his entries, but this gives people a glimpse into the honesty and kindness we’ve grown to appreciate in our good friend. Feel free to give him an encouraging comment. Click on the image to view the video.

Steve Garfield emailed me to notify me that Ze Frank used the video we made at Podcamp for his brilliant video blog, The Show (this is the link to my episode!). We created a tableau to honor “Ride the Fire Eagle Danger Day.” I am in the front to the left. If you are a fan of Ze Frank’s The Show, then you already know how awesome this is. If you are not familiar with Ze, then I would check out some episodes before you pass me off as crazy. Ze Frank is doing some amazing stuff. Ironically this is the first episode in months that I didn’t see the day it was posted. What have I been doing? I have been at NHFX (New Hampshire Film Expo), NH’s biggest film event. I oversee an amazing program called the Young Filmmakers Workshop. It is a weekend long series of screenings, discussions, hands on workshops, and special guests. The event culminates in the production of a short film that is screened on the big screen prior to the festival’s closing ceremonies.

Solution Watch has posted a great collection of web based tools and office applications for students, teachers and administrators. It is part of a three part series called Back to School with the Class of Web 2.0. I have been using some of these applications during my development meetings for Boston Neutrino. These are great tools that enable me to have productive meetings with the director and technical director without leaving my apartment. As web based applications continue to develop, I believe it will significantly change the way we work. Soon I will be integrating these tools and office applications in the classroom.
According to their site, Solution Watch surveys the new generation of the web, reviewing and providing in-depth walkthroughs of today’s best products and services. It is owned and maintained by Brian Benzinger.

I will regularly post links to notable video on the net. Here are three you should check out:
I’m a Gangsta — The Motivation and The Regret - With the Conscious Youth Media Crew, 16 year old filmmaker Ruben City Palomares explores what motivates young people to join gangs. Scary, powerful.
Alive in Baghdad - American and Iraqi correspondents post testimonies from individual Iraqis, footage of daily life in Iraq, and short news segments from Iraq to you. Created by Brian Conley. Inspiring work.
Something to be Desired - A comedic web series that follows a group of twenty-something deejays at the fictitious WANT FM in Pittsburgh, PA. STBD has been posting episodes since the summer of 2003 under the direction of Justin Kownacki.
Also check out the amazing new resource Network2.tv for more shows exclusively found on the net!

With the archive of my video blog The Eye growing, people increasingly ask: What is the purpose of video blogging? Is it to make money? Is it an attempt at fame? What possesses one to take a camera and decide that he or she is going to create his or her own show? What is the charge of online user generated content? Here is my response.
When I first started video blogging, my motto was lifted from public television. I worked for NHPTV for several years, starting as a production intern and leaving after a season as a game show co-host and floor director for a nightly news magazine program. I left the station to become a teacher but the motto -Entertain, Educate, and Enrich- stayed with me. It was a worthy mantra as I dipped into the world of video on the net.
As I recently told my students, we are involved in a media revolution. Read the rest of this entry »

A Houston parent calls for the banning of a book concerning book banning? Check out the story here. Someone could have at least told the guy it was Banned Books Week, a time, according to the American Library Association’s Web site, to celebrate the freedom to choose or express one’s opinion, even if it might be considered unorthodox or unpopular.
My Mass Media and Communications class ironically just finished reading Ray Bradbury’s classic novel. I teach it early in the year, because the book’s messages about freethinking, the critical importance of knowledge and literacy, and the freedom of speech are paramount in today’s world. Do yourself a favor. Click on the image an buy yourself a copy. There is a quote at the start of the novel that I have always found particularly exciting. Spanish Nobel Prize winning poet Juan Ramon Jimenez is quoted as saying, “If they give you ruled paper, then write the other way.” Now wouldn’t that make a great t-shirt?

Steve Garfield invited me to speak at a fantastic monthly meetup called Boston Media Makers. Boston Media Makers is a group of local video producers, video bloggers, podcasters, artists, and creative people who want to get together and share what they are doing over coffee on a Sunday morning. This past Sunday I spoke about a project I’m producing called Boston Neutrino. The Neutrino Video Project was started in NYC by a daring troupe of improvisational theater performers. With three cameras and a large technical crew, Neutrino takes to the streets to shoot, edit, score, and mix a completely improvised movie in the time it takes for you to watch it. The show has been heralded in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Detroit, San Francisco, Toronto, and Washington, D.C. You will hear more about the project as we get closer to the troupe’s performance at ImprovBoston in November. In the meantime, check out Boston Media Makers. There is a play-by-play of yesterday’s meeting on the site. And I can’t wait until next month!
